Themes

The theme of a novel is the central idea or insight about life that an author wants the reader to understand. The plot generally helps to explain the theme. A novel may have a single theme or several themes. To identify the theme in a novel, consider the actions, thoughts, and words of characters in the story. What is the theme of a novel you have read in the past or a novel that you are currently reading? Figure out how the story applies to life in general. Ask yourself, “What lesson(s) should I take from this story?” Discuss your ideas. (CT Standard Theme: identify and discuss the underlying theme or main idea in texts.)

One theme of the book: "Crispin: Cross of Lead" is courage. Crispin is chased by the predator, and he is the prey. He is in search for his father in a far away town which requires a perilous journey to get to. With his friend he finds along the way, Bear, show great courage of not giving up and searching for his father who is reportivly in the town in which
Crispin is searching for. This book has many themes, but courage is by far the greatest.

I've only made through 197 pages of Eldest since I started on January 25th (so I'm not into the part where the title means anything)but so far in the book there have been different themes. One theme is the war over Roran because these people came to take Roran but because the villagers won't let him go their having a war. Another theme is Traveling, I call this traveling because Eragon, Arya, and Orik are going to Ellesmera but they have to travel a long way to get their because they can't ride on the dragon. These are the only themes I know because these events are the only events I've read so far.

The theme in the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is that it's Harry's last year at Hogwarts and Dumbledore is dead. Voldemort tried to kill Harry, but, since Voldemort has some of Harry's blood, if Voldemort's alive, then Harr is alive. This is a great theme for a final book in a series.

In the book I’m reading "The Traitors Gate" the theme is faith because everyone keeps lying to the main character john but he keeps searching and beliefs that he will find the truth and help his dad who is in debtor’s prison. Another reason I think the main theme is faith because he keeps digging because he knows he will find the truth. That is why I think the theme of this book is faith because he has faith in himself to finds t he truth

The book that I am reading is "Cirque du Freak: Killers of the Dawn" by Darren Shan. The theme that I will remember the most in these books are the characters. I will remember the characters because most of them are actually vampires. This is very interesting because there are few books that use vampires and none of them have developed them as well as the "Cirque du Freak" series. Also the series starts with a kid that is my age and because of his vampire blood had a prolonged childhood at this age. This allows me relate to the characters and I like to relate to the characters in the books I read.

The theme of Cirque Du Freak is Extreme courage. I say this because they have to fight vampaneze which are vampires only they are purple and evil. The vampires and the vampaneze have a war and the vampires win the war and the prophecy didn't come true.

In the book that I am reading 'divine Madness" the theme is bravery. I think this is the theme because kids that are fourteen have to fight some of the worlds most ruthless terrorists that are trying to takeover the world.

In the book I am currently enjoying, "I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You," has one main theme, suspicion. This is because Cammie, the main character, has to go under cover and make up her whole life to keep her spy school a secret from a boy she meets. Her friends are very curious about who this boy is and what he wants with Cammie. However, Josh, Cammie's crush, starts to wonder who Cammie really is. Thins start to heat up when Josh gets suspicous about how Cammie really lives.

I'm halfway through a book called Down the Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams and the theme of the book I think is bravery. Ingrid, a 6th grader, sneaks into someone’s house which is off limits because recently the lady living in the house died. Ingrid is being very brave to sneak into the person’s house because she is only getting her soccer cleats! While she is in the house someone comes in so she has to stay calm and hide so she doesn’t get caught.

One book I have read recently is "Just Listen" by Sarah Dessen. I think the theme of this book is lies because the main character, Annabel, has to tell a lot of them. She is going through a really hard time: a sister with an eating disorder and a secret about something that happened over the summer. Annabel always lies and says that she's just fine so that people don't have to worry about her. This all changes when she mets Owen, a boy who always tells the truth. Now Annabel must learn to tell the truth about the summer and about her feelings.

I just finished reading the second PRIVATE book in the series. I think the theme to these books is just how life is like for these teenage girls. These books are very similar to the Clique series and have the same idea. One of the themes is when Reed is faced with desions to follow the Billings Girls or obey the rules. She gets herself through a lot of problems and in the end, she finds out her her true friend sreally are. I also recemend this book to girls who enjoyed the Clique series.

I read "The Traitors Gate" like micheal, and it is true everyone lies to John but he keep on trying to find the truth and evidence to help his father. But i think that the theme is lying. Everyone lies to John and never tells him the truth.I understand why mike said faith is the theme becasue John needs to belive himself, and not listen to the lies. So there are more than one themes.

The theme of The Last Apprentice is bravery because if the spooks are not brave then they can't disperse a ghast or a ghost because they would end up running away.

I agree with Stephen JK Rowling chose a great theme to the final book in the series. Also the theme shows the difficulties Harry Potter has to go through to complete his task. this book is a great concluding book to the amazing series.

One theme of the book I am rading,"Cathy's Book", is friendship. In the book, Cathy and her best friend Emma are trying to track down Cathy's ex boyfriend Victor. Throughout the novel, Emma and Cathy are constanley fighting over their problems and personal needs. After sorting things out, the girls always get closer to finding Victor. This shows that Emma and Cathy need each other to get through hard times.

One of the books I read was "All American Girl" By Meg Cabot. I love all Meg Cabot’s book but this one was one of my favorites. I figure it is because of the theme of the book. This girl Samantha and her two sisters whom are Lucy a very popular and not nice sister and Rebecca a student who is very intelligent for her age 10 (she is taking collage classes.) Samantha has her own looks and her own personality and many people don’t like her for that. Samantha’s best friends name is Catharine and she is just like Samantha so they get along well together. Samantha used to be a very nice outgoing person until; she moved for one year then came back. Her old friend wasn’t her friend anymore and wasn’t very nice to Samantha. She decides to die all her close black and not be very friendly. I think the theme of this story I will always remember as one of my favorite books.

A theme of the book "The Mysterious Island," is optimism. A group of men are stranded on an island and have to find food, water and shelter. Throughout the whole story, the men stay optimistic, even when their island is attacked by a group of pirates.

I just finished one of the Clique books. Although some people don't really think that it has good lessons (etc) it does! I think that the author is trying to show her readers that you should always try your best and never give up. Fight for what you believe in. Also be yourself, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. the author does do a good job on writing things that todays 6th, 7th, even 8 th graders can relate to.
