Character Inferences

An inference is a judgment you make based on the information available to you. To make an inference—to infer—you have to have some kind of evidence. For example, if you were walking home from school and suddenly smelled smoke and heard sirens, your past experience and knowledge would lead you to the conclusion that there was a fire nearby. In literature, you use the things you read—the information that’s available to you—to make inferences about things such as: a character’s personality, interests, or physical appearance; a character’s history; a character’s age; the history of relationships between characters; the reasons for a character’s behavior; a character’s intention; a character’s next action.

Think about the clues the author in the book you are currently reading gives you about a character’s behavior. Also think about your own knowledge of what you or someone you know would do in the same situation. Make an inference/judgment about the character. Explain your inference by supporting your response with details from the story.

(CT Standard: Making Inferences: make and justify inferences from explicit and/or implicit information.)

I've made inferences before. One of the inferences I've made was in an anime called Tsubasa by Clamp(manga group) I made an inference in Tsubasa once because there was a building collapse but before it collapsed Syaoran and Sakura got out. In the back a guy with a familiar symbol was watching them so I supposed that he was working with the guy who was trying to take over the different worlds and prevent Sakura from getting her memory feather's.

One inference I have made before was in my non-fiction book called Slash by Saul Hudson and Anthony Bozza. In one part of the book, Slash (Saul Hudson) was setting up for a show at Giant's Stadium with his band Guns N' Roses. Before that part though the band’s lead singer Axl Rose was complaining about his throat hurt during the tour. After waiting for almost an hour Axl had not shown up to play. So I infered that Axl was too sick to perform.

I make character infrences a lot, But for some reason i always find something wrong with the character. It's always something to do with the way he acts or the way he looks. Even when it's a real person i ussually find something to talk about.

I have made alot of inferences before. One in particular is in the book I am reading called It Girl by Cericly von Ziegesar. I relized that a girl named Brett is very afraid to like someone because she has gotten crushed so many times before. I understand why she would feel uncomfortable being with someone again. I think Brett has gone through so much that she can't take it anymore, and I think that she finaly gave up.

I can make inferences in most of the fiction books I am reading. Especially in books that have a lot of suspense, I like to step back for a minute and try to infrence what is going to happen. One prime example of this was when the Harry Potter 7 book came out. However, the plot had so many twists and turns that it was nearly impossible to predict what would happen. One prediction that I did get right was that both Harry and Voldemort would die at the end.

In Harry Potter, I always make inferences. For example, when the Death Eaters and Voldemort were looking for Harry people came into the area where Harry, Ron, and Hermoine were hiding. They were about to give up, but I inferenced that they would find Harry. I was right. They did find Harry, but in the end, Harry was alive.

A lot of times the book won't tell you how old the character is, or how he's/she's realted to another character, or why they're at the place they're at. Sometimes it tells you later, sometimes it doesn't. Alot of times you have to figure things out on your own. Sometimes the author doesn't want to tell you so you can decide. For example, right now I'm reading the book Lionboy and it doesn't tell me how old the main character is. I had feeling he was on the young side; eight, nine, maybe ten. But I could easily see someone else reading it and saying he's fourteen. Authors want you to make these inferences by yourself so that you can connect with the story better and the book will have a bigger audience. We make inferences all the time and don't even realize it; the hard thing for authors is figuring out what we will get and what we won't.

One inference I made in my book, Twilight was when Bella (the main character) asked Edward to become a vampire with him. He was hesitating, and throughout the book he gave hints on how he did not want to end her life. I infer that eventually he will give in and make her like his own kind, but it will take him some time to do so.

I always enjoy making inferences while I am reading. For example, while I was reading the cirque du freak series, I predicted that Darren Shan would lose the fight to the vampire lord, but he didn’t. I inferred that he would lose but my inference did not come true.

In the Clique book Bratfest at Tiffany's I would infer that the character, Massie is stuck up. This is because in all of the Clique books she and her friends often make rude remarks about the people around them. She also makes fun of people because of how they are dressed and many other reasons. Even though I think this I still love the Clique books!!

When I am reading i always like to make inferences, especially in fiction books. In the book that I just finished reading, Man Vs Beast, I predicted that the main character, James was going to die. It ended up that I inferred it right and he died. although the main character died it was still a very good book.

I make inferences all the time. For Example, i made an inference in the book I'm currently reading called,Pendragon: The Pilgrims of Rayne. In the book, the Flighters launch a bomb at the strange building Bobby, Loque, and Siry are in. Theres a huge glass dome over Roque's head, where the bomb was aimed at. Roque was stunned and looked up as the Dome shatters above his head, as the bomb hits it. Roque doesn't get out, or answer Bobby or Siry. It doesn't actually say he died, but Bobby and I inferred that he died. Bobby and Loque aslso infer this later.

I just finished the book New Moon; it is one of the books from the Twilight series. I made an inference that in the next book, Bella (the main character) will get bitten by her vampire-boyfriend (Edward). I feel this way because in New Moon, they made a deal that if Bella marries Edward, then she will get bitten by him sooner and then they will get married, and love each other forever.

These books are amazing. I really think that everyone should read them. (:
