Lessons in Writing

“For it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more.” This is a quote from The Pearl that states one of the lessons of the parable by Steinbeck. Using this same quote, discuss how it compares to a novel you have read or are currently reading. Be sure to connect the quote with your novel, making specific references to both stories and how each author included the lesson in their writing. (CT Standard:1. Developing literary awareness: evaluate an author’s values, ethics, and beliefs included in many texts)

"For it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more." John Steinbeck uses this quote in his novel, "The Pearl" to try and show the reader that people are too greedy. When I read this quote, it reminded me of a book I read called, "The Clique." This book is about teenaged girls who are spoiled by their parents and always need more than what they are given. I personally believe that this quote shows juvenile behavior from perfectionist who are too insecure to just be thankful for the thing that they were given.

A while ago I posted a comment about the book "Feed" by M. T. Anderson. In the book the main character is a person named Titus. He is a rich American from the twenty-third century and he can get almost any thing that he wants. There is a super computer installed in his brain, like everyone else. he goes to the moon, and thinks that it's lame. He feels the same way about Mars. Half of us would kill to just be able to go, and he wants more. This really shows what Steinbeck was trying to say. "For it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more." People are greedy.

In the book I am reading,The Dragon's Eye, a boy finds out he is the rightful king of a magical world. Erec, the boy, gets to have his own scepter which holds magic and follows his commands. After finding out he is to become king, Erec is reminded that he has to complete twelve quests in order to have his own scepter. Even though Erec is the new king and gets his own power tool, he still whats to get a queen and put all of the evil people in his dungeon. Erec starts to get greedy and by the help of his friend Bethany is starting to realize it. This is an example of how someone who gets all he has ever dreamed of is not satisfied and still wants more.

"For it is said that humans are never satisfied that you five them one thing and they want something more." That quote reminds me of a book I read called "Twilight" By Stephanie Meyer. The boy, Edward wants to be with Bella just to get to know her. After a while, he becomes attached to her, and wants her all to himself. I think this is similar to The pearl because when you are first given something you want more of it.

In two books that I have recently finished, (Riding Lessons and Flying Changes by Sara Gruen), the daughter of the main character is going through a tough time, but she is still very greedy. She wants a volunteer job, which she gets and then gets fired, then she wants to get the job back by begging, which she gets, then she wants a horse, which she gets, then she wants to go to a riding school, which she does and then gets kicked out of... Then, she says she will never ride again if she can't go back. So, after pleading and having her mother talk to the riding schools owner, she gets to go back. There are always a series of events going on about how that girl, Eva, gets her way. The worst part is that, yes, she says, "Thank you!" and "You're the best!", but the next day or so, she does something horrible and gets punished, she says "I hate you!" and "You're so stupid!" to her mother. Her mother, the one that gave her so much.

"For it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more." this qoute reminds me of the clique series books because Massie, Alicia, Kristin, and Dylan all are rich except Kristen. They get what ever they want and when something goes out of style they want something better. This can show you that they are spoiled and think that they are better than you just because they have nicer clothes. I know that everyone does the same if something new comes out they want it or if your brother gets more than you got for everyone does it. This is what the qoute is telling you.

“For it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more.” This quote from The Pearl can be compared to a novel I have read would be the Clique series because they have books about growing up and have fun with life while you can. I think the author Lisi Harrison was trying to shoe that the lesson in the Clique books is that even though you take on a lot of responsibilities when you grow up and have to learn to deal when you can’t have something you really want. For example, Massie Block wanted a bracelet really badly but could not have it because her Mom wouldn’t buy it because she had just gotten something.

One lesson that have learned was that in the book that I am reading right now, Someone Like You. “There are something’s in the world that you rely on, like a sure bet. And when they let you down, shifting from where you carefully placed them, it shakes your faith, right where you stand.” This taught me that be careful who you rely on because you can never know then too well, they could be gone or out of your life at any time. Maybe even the times that you need them that most. (Kaitlyn O.)
